Blog 1: 14th April 2014. T minus 1

One day to go!

So there we were, the four of us, checked in and ready to go at Jury's Inn hotel, Heathrow (Hatton Cross), having accidentally thought our flight departed at 8AM and not the actual 8PM that it really was. Easy mistake! Mum and dad in one room, Emma and me in another, on the 7th floor, to my dad's and my delight (and potentially, Emma's dismay), looking south over the final approach path to Runway 27L. I could go on for hours describing the many planes which went by, but you'll just have to use your imagination, as I'm sure you already are... So dad and I used a radio scanner, and in conjunction with the (now famous, thanks to MH370) FlightRadar24, managed to entertain ourselves for hours tracking the arriving and departing flights from Britain's busiest airport.
View of Heathrow runway 09L from the top floor of Jury's Inn, Heathrow. The more astute of you may note that looking south from our window would not permit us to see the end of 27L (it being aligned at ~270°), let alone planes actually landing on it. Luckily though, the emergency fire escape of Jury's Inn had a panoramic view looking due west, i.e., directly over Heathrow Airport! What a sight!!
Already tired of just watching planes go by from the window, and Emma just wanting to watch Britain's Got Talent Get Me Out Of the Next Top Model Factor, mum dad and me took a small hike along the A312 toward the end of the approach lighting for 27L, to watch planes from close-up (something mum likes to do too!), and take a few photos, being photobombed occasionally by landing jetliners.
